Merry Christmas everyone!

Hi everyone. I hope you all have a great Christmas break, and safe and relaxing holidays.

I'm off to see my Mum up North for a few days, then down to see my Dad and other family in Dunedin. A well earned and much needed break!

My Felt store is now closed until January 6th (you can still message me, I just probably won't reply very quickly).

Have fun!

One last Felt Favs post before Christmas

Hopefully you're all getting your Christmas shopping out of the way nice and early (if you can call this early)... but if you need a few last minute (well, for buying online anyway) pressies, check out my latest favourite finds on Felt.

1) I think everyone on Felt has 'ooohhhed' over hjrddesign's Magnetic Decals. So cool and unique!
2) Be eco-fashionable this Christmas with Skipapple's Coffee Cup Eco-Sleeves.
3) New to Felt, Create Or Bust's funky brooches. I love 'Frankie'.
4) Honey Design's Alice in Wonderland Bookmarks would be a great stocking filler!
5) For the girl on the go, Ruby In The Dust's Pocket Mirror and Pouch.
6) And last but not least, for someone special, Two Wee Birds Sterling Silver Pendant by Wishing Tree.

Love them all.

Winners!

Thanks to everyone who entered my giveaway. It was nice to have so many lovely comments here and on Facebook - I now even have more than 100 fans, and more followers here, so welcome to the new faces!

Congrats to Rachael (who entered on Facebook) and Bee. Your parcels will be in the mail as soon as you send me your addresses!

How's everyone's Christmas preparation going? I'm so happy, only just over a week of work left for the year!!! Yay.

Mmmm, minty

He he, look at that. My cuff links made it into the Summer 09/10 issue of Australian magazine Peppermint. They're alongside so many wonderful products from people I admire and love. I didn't even know about it until a friend told me! I'm glad that I managed to track down a copy (from Swonderful), it looks like it'll keep my crafty eyes entertained over my summer holidays.... ahh, roll on holiday time!

Have you entered my giveaway? If not, snap to it, ends on Sunday.

It's giveaway time!!!

Ok, I said I'd do a giveaway when I got to 100 fans on Facebook, but I can't be bothered waiting... I've met some really lovely and talented people this year, in 'real' life and online, and would like to do a giveaway to thank everyone around me for their support and friendship throughout 2009. You can win one of two
Freedom Creative prize packs.

Each contains a Japanese Inspired Scrabble Tile Necklace, a Wooden Brooch and three Japanese Fabric Hair Ties, valued at over $40 each!

They'd make great Christmas pressies for someone special, or of course, yourself. Entering is easy, all you need to do is leave a comment (say anything!) here on my blog, or on my Facebook status update about this giveaway (here). You can enter twice (once here and once on Facebook), entries will close at midnight (NZ time) on Sunday 13th December, winners drawn at random and I'll notify the winners (make sure you leave your email address if you leave an anonymous message here).

Oh yeah, Felt now also says the number of sales each seller has had, as well as their feedback rating. I've had 167 sales... wow, didn't think it would be that many!!!

How'd the market go? Great!

The Night Market on Thursday was a great night! I was beside the lovely Rose of Rose Among Thorns and there were so many other talented crafters, with awesome looking stalls. And of course, lots of lovely customers, some who even come along just to see me! How nice. There were tonnes of people through the doors and everyone seemed to be in the Christmas pressie buying spirit!

Thanks to everyone who visted, and everyone who helped organise the night, especially Lucy. Here's a photo of my stall at the beginning of the night. I sold out of magnets and gift tags (both made especially for the occasion).
I've spent the last few days filling orders from the market, photographing my stock and updating my Felt store, which is looking a lot healthier now.

My range is ever-changing because of the papers I use and my mind not standing still, but new to my range now are custom made Scrabble letter brooches and pins, and Japanese fabric hair ties.

Check back on Monday for an awesome giveaway, two prizes to be won!

To market, to market

That's right, Freedom Creative will be at The Night Market next Thursday!!!

Hot on the heels of Craft2.0, Felt is proud to present The Night Market, a Christmas shopping event on Thursday 3 December from 6pm till 10pm, for those who like something different. Featuring some of the best and brightest of the Christchurch craft community, The Night Market is a treasure trove of beautiful handmade products, including jewellery, accessories, candles, books and all manner of gorgeous Christmas decorations and gift ideas. Head along after work or make a night of it!

I'll have some new products that aren't even listed in my Felt shop yet (which I'll post about before then if I get the chance, not promising anything though!).

Yay! xox

Extra Curricular

You've probably seen other fellow crafters (especially in New Zealand) blogging about the release of the new Extra Curricular magazine... Mine arrived in the post today (thanks postie!), and I'm excited to have a good read of it, but that'll have to wait 'til the weekend. It's a sweet wee mag 'for and about people getting creative with their spare time'. It's available on Felt here, but be quick, it was a limited print run of 500!

There's also a Felt advert on the inside back cover, with one of my bamboo necklaces. Thanks to Lucy who always does an awesome job of getting Felt's name out there.

Christmas is coming!

Eeek, the weeks are flying by far too fast, and Christmas is rapidly approaching. Need some ideas for (handmade) Christmas gifts? Check out the Felt Christmas Gift Guide, separated into categories to make it easy to find the perfect gift. If you're from overseas, or posting to friends overseas, the Christmas postage deadlines are also fast approaching...

I'm flat out at the moment, filling orders and getting stock ready for The Night Market on December 3rd. If you're in Christchurch come along, say hi, and have a browse at all the talented crafters from around here. I'll have more info on the market closer to the time, but am excited and working on a few new products to tempt you all!

Absent...

Sorry, been a bit absent lately... just a quick update to say hi, I'm still alive. Nothing to say, just needing some time and simpleness while thinking things through.

Love this photo, I wish it was me. Something to brighten your day in case you're feeling like me. (Photo title is purely coincidental I promise!)

Lucky me!

A few weeks back I was lucky enough to win a competition over on Jess of Bam Bam Creative's blog. A won this super sweet 'Babe In The Wood' wall embellishment, which is now happily on our office/studio wall. She also threw in some wee heart magnets, so I'm super lucky!!! Thanks Jess!

Want one for yourself (I know you do)!? Here's a link to her Etsy shop.

Jess is not only a super clever crafter, but she's just started a new blog, Penny In My Purse, about saving a bit of money where you can. It's good reading so head on over and check it out.

Excited? Yes I was... when my Moo Minicards arrived in the mail on Saturday! Film opinions

We love going to the movies, and try to see one each week. Here's what we've seen lately and my thoughts:

Up (in 3D) Another Pixar classic that I'll definitely be buying on DVD. It was great! Parts of it were pretty sad, but that just made the story all that much more lovable. Metacritic score: 88, Mine: 5/5

District 9 Not so great. I expected big things from this movie... even though it really didn't look like my type of thing, everyone raved about it, so we went. I should have trusted my gut. Metacritic score: 80, Mine: 2/5

Funny People This movie was too long for a comedy, and all the good bits we'd already seen in the trailer. Adam Sandler's been slipping downhill for a while and this is no exception. Metacritic score: 60, Mine: 2½/5

Inglourious Basterds I didn't really want to see this, but went along with friends. I'm not a Tarantino fan (eeek, shock horror!), but I enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I would. Highlight = Melanie Laurent as Shosanna Drefus (pictured above - bottom left). Metacritic score: 69, Mine 3½/5

The Ugly Truth A lovely, light hearted comedy. Predictable as always, but easy to watch and funny enough. Exactly what I expected. Metacritic score: 28, Mine: 3½/5

Really looking forward to: 500 Days Of Summer and Where The Wild Things Are.
Maybe looking forward: to The Lovely Bones, Couples Retreat and Alice In Wonderland.

Anything I should see or be looking forward to that hasn't caught my eye?

Recents gifts (to me, from me)

Left Nesting dolls (aka Russian dolls or Matryoshka dolls) from Notty Horse at South City (also available on their website here). I've been looking for a nice set for a while, and was stoked when I saw this set!

Middle Jumbo Bulldog Clip from new store, Smiggle on George Street in Dunedin. It's 15cm long and quite an effort to squeeze! Also available from their webiste, here.

Right Queen Anne Teacup, Saucer and Plate Set from Broad Bay China, down the Otago Peninsula. If you're in Dunedin you have to visit this shop, it's divine! This set matches the butterfly I bought a few weeks back (blogged here).

Crafty Business tonight!

Just a super quick one... I had a great break, but of course we're straight back into the slog that is my day job... sigh.

Reminding anyone who's interested that session 7 of Crafty Business is on tonight, 7pm at Churchill's in Colombo Street, Christchurch.

Come along and meet some friendly, crafty people, have a chat, a glass of wine and perhaps find the answers to your photography questions (tonights topic).

More over at the Crafty Business blog, here.

A few days off

Tomorrow we're off on a wee trip to see some close family that we haven't seen all year. I'm in dire need of a break and really, really looking forward seeing them!

So my shop is closed for a few days. You can still purchase things and message me, but I most likely won't reply until late Monday. Have a great weekend, and I leave you (only for a few days, don't fret!), with this gorgeous watercolour image from Travis Stearns, found via the Oh Joy blog.

New stockist - Toi Toi

Hi all.

Just letting you know that Toi Toi is now stocking some of my necklaces and brooches. They're in the Triangle Centre, on High Street (the mall part), in the city of Christchurch. Pop down and check them out. They have so many lovely gift ideas, like the butterfly I treated myself to. It's made from an old dainty saucer, so so so sweet!

All going to plan, I'll be back tomorrow (here, not Toi Toi that is!). (It didn't all go to plan, but hopefully I'll get a chance to update before Thursday... we're off work for a long weekend and having a wee trip away, hooray!).

So glad it's the weekend! Enjoy, Em xox

Gift ideas - Father's Day - Sept 6th

Down here in NZ it's Father's Day in a few weeks - September 6th. I think Dads have to be one of the hardest people in the family to make or buy a gift for... So, if you're as stuck as I am, check out these gift ideas on Felt, for unique and wonderful handmade gifts to show Dad how much you love him! Link here.

Inspiration...

I love these pictures made using paint sample cards by Geninne (blog here). So so so sweet, clever and inspirational. They make me feel happy. Her whole blog is wonderful reading, head on over and check it out.

On a side note, New Zelanders, don't forget that Father's Day is just around the corner, on September 6th. Is yours as hard to buy for as mine? Perhaps some cuff links are the perfect gift for your Dad.

The handmade world of Coraline

Just a quick note about my shop. I now have NZ stamp brooches available (see above for an example). They range in price from $15 - $25 and feature some truely gorgeous stamps, dating back to the 1960s.

I have been hanging out for the film Coraline to get to NZ for so long... it opened overseas in February and it's already out on DVD over there. It finally starts here this Thursday. I went to an advanced screening last night expecting a lot from it, and it didn't disappoint! If you don't know anything about Coraline, it's a animated stop-motion film based on Neil Gaiman's novel (of the same name). Coraline Jones finds a small door in her new home, which leads her to a magical, wonderful alternate version of her life. Of course all is not as perfect as it seems....

It was quite dark and creepy, which I loved, and I was amazed at how long it was for a stop-motion film. It was also in 3D, which rocked!!! Go and see it, or buy the DVD if you're overseas. It also has a pretty wicked website, with great music, which I think the movie lacked a bit of. That's my only criticism though.

Sorry for the lack of posts lately, 'real' work's been incredibly hectic, hopefully this week will be better. Crafty Business tomorrow night, so that's a good start to the week, it doesn't feel like a month since the last one!

Wearable postage

These are the new brooches I've been working on... made from bamboo, lovely used New Zealand stamps, and coated in a glassy layer of resin. I had a meeting with a new stockist today and she snapped these up, so I'll have to get making some more to list in my Felt store!

A wee world in a jar

I've wanted a terrarium for ages, after stumbling across so many sweet wee items to make them funky on Etsy, and then looking them up on Flickr.

My Sunday afternoon project was making one and this is how it turned out (click on photo to see it larger). It was pretty easy - there's lots of instructions on the net. Mine consists of medium sizes stones, tiny stones, charcoal (made for aquarium filters - bought from a pet shop), soil, a 'Scleranthus Uniflorus' and a touch of moss from our backyard. I'm not sure if the plant is 'suitable' but it looks sweet. Oh yeah, and a cute wee fawn to finish it off!

I'll be back later in the week with new brooches, see ya then!

Shop update: cuff links now available

A customer requested that I make her some cuff links the other day, never one to turn down the opportunity to make and sell something new, they're now available from my Felt shop.

You pick the letters - what would you write with only two letters? Initials? A two letter word? Or something more creative?

New goodies (for me)

Like most women, I like love shopping. Here's a couple of sweet things I've picked up lately.

On the left: a sweet wee tealight candle holder, from Toi Toi (a cool new store with lots of great gift ideas - in High Street - the mall part, Christchurch). It's so unique, the 'leaves' are thin metal and can be bent wherever, and the wee birdie is a magnet, so you can pop him where you want. The two people in front of me were also buying these, they must be popular!

On the right: A bag made by Moki, two sisters from Central Otago. I bought it from their Felt store, and it was hard to choose which design I liked best. I chose well!!! It's so so so well made, hand screen printed, the perfect size (with straps that you can tie how you like) and I love the mixture of fabrics and colours.

I've got some new products in the works, mainly in my brain, but one is very close to completion. I'll keep you posted.

PS. You can now become a fan of Freedom Creative™ on Facebook, and follow me on Twitter!

Am I slow?

I think I've been living under a rock...

Today I discovered Frankie magazine, through Sweet William's wonderful blog. I hadn't heard of it before, but after work picked up a copy (which by the way, seems to be the last issue, and not the one which Sweet William are talking about, which must come out in a few days), and it's great.

It's a really styley Australian magazine about art, fashion, music, craft and life, filled with lots of wonderful stories, photos, products, illustrations and ads (yes, I like ads). I especially love the 'Frank Bits' section which shows off lots of wee things, sites, products etc that all rock (snippet pictured to the right, love love love love those wallets).

If you haven't already, get into it, now leave me alone so I can give it the time it deserves, ha ha!

What kind of creative are you?

What kind of creative are you? Do this quiz and find out! I'm 'Hands On', which sounds about right:
For you creativity is all about getting physical. You like to roll up your sleeves and get stuck in. Being able to make something with your hands is an important expression of who you are. Art is probably a big part of your life and you like to use your natural flair for creativity at work and home. You particularly enjoy the feeling of seeing a project through from start to finish. Nothing beats the sense of satisfaction that come from watching your own creation evolve and grow. Chances are you really appreciate the special skills that you have – it’s a wonderful gift to be able to express yourself in this way.
You like to see creativity as something that is free, without boundaries and rules – you’re a rebel at heart!

We have a winner

Thanks to all of those who entered my prize draw at Craft2.0 last weekend. We drew the winner this afternoon and the prize (an item of their choice from my Felt store) goes to Emma H (purely coincidental I promise!). There were over 60 entries, which is a lot considering how hard it was for people to get to my stall and have enough space to fill out an entry. I'm interested to see what Emma picks!

Sunday, 7 June 2009

Phew, it's Sunday

I survived Craft2.0 yesterday. We had been warned about the number of people through the doors (especially just after opening at 11am), but it was so busy!!!! I had a great day, met lots of lovely people, got tonnes of great compliments and even sold enough to make the hard work worth it.

Now I have to post all my unsold items to my Felt store, so keep an eye out on that if you're looking for something you saw at Craft2.0.

A big thanks goes to Earl for helping me out with my stand, Sue, Lucy and their helpers for making the day as non-hectic as possible, everyone who came through the doors, and especially Mark for not getting angry after I spent all my nights hidden away in the office.

The photos above are of my stall, and my purchases from the day; a gorgeous print from Minu, and a necklace from Random Little Things. I just wish I'd had more time to have a better look around.

Wednesday, 3 June 2009

See you there!

Only three sleeps to go until Craft2.0, eeek!!! Here are some of the goodies you can see and buy at Craft 2.0 this Saturday. Don't forget, it's at Our City O-Tautahi on the corner of Worcester Boulevard and Oxford Terrace, from 11am - 3pm. I'll be downstairs in Gallery Two. Come along and support and meet the talented crafty community here in Christchurch, and from out of town.

Some exciting things to note:

• Be in quick - Free Craft2.0 goodies bags for the first 50 adults and 50 kids through the door!!!

There'll be prize draws, including one on my stall! Enter for free, to win any item you like from my Felt store. The winner will be announced on here the following weekend.

• I'll be removing everything from my Felt store on Friday night, and will be re-adding everything (and tonnes more assuming I'm not going to sell out) over the days after Craft2.0.

See you there!

Well Crafted indeed...

Just a quick post as I have lots of craft work to get finished for Craft2.0 next weekend!

This article was in the Press on Thursday. It looked great!!! That's one of my necklaces on the left (and Lucy's wearing it on the right). Lucy, Sue and everyone else involved are doing a really great job of promoting Craft2.0, Felt and crafting in general. Click on the photo if you'd like to have a read.

You can now follow my blog too, see down on the right. I have my first follower - thanks Rose.

See ya, Em

Crafty Promotion

Hey peeps.

As part of Craft2.0 Sue is doing profiles on each of the sellers, and mine's up on the blog today. Head on over and check it out.

Off to Queenstown for the night tomorrow, so having an extra long weekend for Queen's Birthday, yay!!!

Finally...

Finally I have listed my new items in my shop. Above left is a gorgeous Bamboo Pendant, which comes on a matching ribbon (available in other designs too), and on the right are my new range of brooches.

They both took a lot of trial and error with the resin going through the hole, and right through the wood, but now I've figured it out, they're definately worth it!

Just in time to brighten up your winter outfits!

Let me know what you think.

Now instore!!!!

Hi folks!

Some exciting news this week! Today Pocket opened in Lyttelton and the lovely Carolyn is stocking some of my pendants. The shop is gorgeous; small, sweet and full of special handmade goodies! Pocket is at 6 London Street (down the alley), and currently only open on Saturdays. Check out the Farmers' Market in Lyttelton while you're there.

And, within the next week, I'll also have stock in Shine, 286 Devon Street East, New Plymouth! Check them out if you're up that way.

Oh yeah, I also got into Craft2.0, in Christchurch in June. Craft2.0 is a craft fair where "everything must be handmade in NZ and have a sense of fun. Craft2.0 is not just any old Craft Fair. We pick from 100s of applications to bring you the most innovative, most exciting and most fun crafty creations from Christchurch and around the country, plus there are always amazing prize draws and gift bags" Yay!

Better get making eh? Will update tomorrow soon with photos of my new items.

Peace and love xox

Butterfly kisses

May the wings of the butterfly kiss the sun.
And find your shoulder to light on.
To bring you luck, happiness and riches.
Today, tomorrow and beyond.

An Irish Blessing

I made this from a frame I had lying around, using wonderful scrapbooking papers and a butterfly punch. I love the way the frame is 3D, giving me room to make the butterflies pop-out a bit. Simple yet beautiful. Inspiration from here.
I also have some supplies coming in, mainly from the US, so when I get them I can start making something new and exciting, all going to plan. Pity mail from the US takes so long to get here!!!
Hope you all had a great Easter, back to work tomorrow for me.

Sew, a needle pulling thread...

So, I can sew... I haven't sewn anything (except the little bird I made about a month ago to make sure the sewing machine worked) since intermediate school I think, and then I got given my Grandma's super cool sewing machine. I've found a new love, and to make sure I knew how to use it, I made this bag (pictured), from this tutorial by tiny happy, and altered the size a bit. I love the fabric, I think it's curtain fabric, and it even has an inside pocket and magnetic snap to keep my things safe.
Turned out pretty well I think!!!

Some of my Flickr favourites

I have missed Flickr... I haven't been on it much at all lately, because I find once I get on it, I don't stop, and many hours go by that I should really be doing something else. It's a great inspiration tool, and here are some of my favourites...
6) Lily

A new 'range'...

Hey all, just to let you know I've got some new style pendants available at my shop. They're larger, wooden and completely handmade by me; cut, sanded, sanded, painted, painted, painted, varnished, varnished, glued and coated! They took a while to make, but that's already paid off, because the one photographed is sold (thanks 'haitken')! This one was one of my favs, so I'm glad I have the same idea as the people who look at my shop. Available in a variety of designs, and square or rectangular. Ciao!

Sweet advertising and Crafty Business

Hi! About time for an update. First of all, I got home today to see that the March issue of World Sweet World is out today! It's a really gorgeous wee mag, with heaps of fun things to make, and lots of inspiration for crafty folk like myself. Lucy from Felt also placed a sweet advert in the front two pages, which I got a spot in (see photos above).

Tonight was the second meeting of Crafty Business, a networking meetup set up by a very clever bunch of ladies. It was great - great content about building a Crafty Business and awesome to meet some more new and very interesting people. We had a 'show and tell' of our crafting wares, and everyone had something unique and superbly handmade. It's neat to put a face to many of the sellers on Felt, after having dribbled over their beautiful items for so long! I'm looking forward to next month's already!

A while back I went to a shop that I thought had a limited supply of paper, only to find they had TONNES. (Thanks Nat for giving me the voucher that made me go there!). I spent far too much money, but got some wonderful paper, which I've been working on a new 'range' with, not too different from my popular Scrabble tile pendants, so hopefully they'll be up on Felt within the next week or two.
That's all for now, nighty night!
