30 Before 30 - #17 Watch Schindler's List

The only thing I knew about Schindler's List before watching it was that it was about the Holocaust and it was the type of film that people were surprised I hadn't seen.

To be honest, I found it a very hard watch. I watched it over various nights (it's over three hours long), and found some scenes devastating. It's graphic, gritty and emotional. Even after learning about the Holocaust at school, to think this film is based on a true story and true events really does blow my mind. It definitely made me think about how lucky we are to live today, in a country where such events don't take place.

It's not my type of entertainment at all (at times I wondered why I was watching it) and I generally don't enjoy films about war or people being mistreated. I think of  films as an escape - so would rather come away from one feeling happy or mesmerised than depressed. I did enjoy the way it was shot though - mainly in black and white and using light and shade very cleverly. The acting was good and I liked the strength of the 'one person can make a difference to many' message.
